Dallens lies around 17 miles (half an hour) from Oban to the south and Glen Coe to the north and, further north, 27 miles (45 minutes) from Fort William. This gives numerous options for any days that you are away from the house although when there are otters in the bay and buzzards overhead many find hard to leave.

Attractions on the doorstep:

  • Castle Stalker - open only sometimes in the year as it is privately owned, see www.castlestalker.com for more details
  • Stalker View - a very good spot for lunch or cakes with its own shops and exhibitions, it is walking distance from the house and well worth a visit - see www.castlestalkerview.com
  • Cycling - bike hire is possible at Port Appin from where the ferry can be taken to Lismore for cycling on a beautifuly (and reasonably flat) island
  • Horse riding - there is an equestrian centre just behind the house and horses from there can be seen riding from the house.
  • Oban Sea Life Centre - with the seal pup rescue centre and other events this is just south of the house and worth a visit www.sealsanctuary.co.uk
  • Linnhe Marine - just behind the house, here you can rent sailing dinghies, motor boats or windsurfers if you are visting in the summer
  • Hillwalking - there are munros at the top of Loch Creran and of course so many more at Glen Coe, the Mamores, the Aonachs and Ben Nevis - for the equipped walker only though!
  • Golf - the 9 hole course at the Dragons Tooth built in 2002, north of the house is worth a visit. Further afield there is Fort William and Oban.

From Oban:

  • Island trips - you can go for the day to Mull, Iona or Tiree or you could go to see the puffins on the Treshnish Isles passing Staffa on the way.
  • In the town - there is the distillery, the chocolate factory www.oban-chocolate.com, trips to the seal colonies, a rare breeds park www.obanrarebreeds.com, shopping, good restaurants, an art gallery and numerous pubs.
  • Further south - you can take trips to the Corryvreckan or the Garvellachs www.sealife-adventures.com, visit Seil Island with the bridge across the Atlantic or watch the boats pass through the Crinan Canal.

Fort William & surrounding area:

  • Glen Coe - with a visitor centre and some haunting walks this is world famous and with good reason
  • Aonach Mor - skiing in the winter and trips to the summit in the summer without the walk
  • Kinlochleven - with the ice factory for those feeling energetic
  • Canyoning, funyakking or rafting (no seriously!) with Vertical Descents www.verticaldescents.com
